Dandruff or nits

With this post, we would like to help you with a common problem: recognising the difference between dandruff and nits. It can be difficult to tell the two apart, but we are here to help you.

What are dandruff and nits?

Dandruff are small white flakes of skin lying loose on the scalp or in the hair. They result from a natural renewal of skin cells and can sometimes cause itching. Dandruff is usually easy to shake out of the hair.

Nits are the eggs of head lice. They are greyish-white in colour and attach firmly to the hair shaft, close to the scalp. Unlike dandruff, nits stick to the hair and cannot be easily swept away.

How do you make the distinction?

Attachment to hair: Dandruff lies loose on the scalp and can be easily swept away. Nits, on the other hand, stick firmly to the hair and are difficult to remove without a special comb.

Location: Nits are usually located close to the scalp as they need heat to develop. Dandruff can occur anywhere in the hair.

Appearance: Although they look similar, nits have an oval shape and are often slightly shinier than dandruff.
